Default New Beginnings

Burrabus barked his orders and the crew responded with such immediacy and precision that the ship seemed to be an extension of its captain?s consciousness. BOOOOM!! the cannons fired with a force that rocked the vessel in repercussion, straining the ship nearly to its breaking point. This latest barrage of cannon fire finally crippled their target, the mighty Mariner, largest ship in all the oceans of Narmir. Its sails torn to shreds and its mast toppled, the Mariner could no longer be maneuvered into a defensive position.

His gamble had paid off. Burrabus had ordered the cannons stabilized to the decking so that when fired they would not role backwards. Instead the energy would be exerted into the ship itself, possibly tearing it to pieces. Indeed, fractures in its structure occurred, and the seas were leaking in. Such tactics allowed the cannon fire to go much farther than normal because much of the energy normally spent in knocking the cannon backwards was instead exerted into the missiles themselves.

Burrabus knew that the firepower of the Mariner was more than four times that of his own ship, so his only chance was to strike first. The aim of his crew had been impeccable; or down right lucky. What his ship lacked in firepower, it more than made up for in speed and maneuverability. Burrabus was on his home territory; he had grown up on the nearby island nation of fire and ice. The waters were treacherous for many reasons. There were rogue icebergs that could tear a ship asunder, upcoming volcanic gases that could decrease the buoyancy of the water enough to easily sink a vessel, and sharp, jagged rocks extended well beyond the shores. Burrabus had used those natural obstacles to sink the small armada that had accompanied the Mighty Mariner.

Three ships had been destroyed by unseen shallow rocks and two others now rested on the volcanic sea bed having been sunken by the tiny bubbles formed by the gasses released from far below. The old sea dog, Burrabus, was able to pick up the scent of the gasses from many leagues away. He maneuvered his ship in such a manner that his pursuers took up natural lanes of pursuit to try and trap him. Burrabus knew the exact lines of pursuit they would take; he had trained them after all.

Only one ship remained in pursuit as he headed straight for the ice-covered shores of his homeland. The Sea Dragon was the name of Burr?s ship. Its unique sails looked like the wings of a dragon turned straight up into the air. His final pursuer must have thought Burrabus had given up when it saw the sails of the Sea Dragon begin to fall. However, it was about to witness a maneuver that Burrabus had never taught another captain before. Just before impacting the ice sheet that covered the land, the dragon wings went down and out. They spanned out like a real dragon?s wings, creating a sudden uplift that momentarily took the entire ship from the icy waters. The timing was perfect, landing the craft atop the ice shelf where it skated at high speeds. Stunned at the sight of the impossible feat, the last ship barely slowed before it impacted the ice that shattered it to pieces.

?Tie down the cannons!!? Burrabus ordered as his ship skated across the slippery ice. As luck would have it, or maybe it was pure genius, their heading was taking them straight back to the Mighty Mariner from which their game of chase had begun with the six destroyed vessels. They were approaching from the land, which was of course the last place the Mariner would suspect them to come from.

The captain of the Mariner, Drake Abernathy, had sent the six destroyers out with confidence that Burrabus would finally be no more. Burrabus had fought for the Sligolian Empire as the captain of a large armada for many years, never questioning orders to destroy. But, a recent order to cease attacks upon an ancient enemy had been disobeyed. A genius in naval war tactics he was, but a skilled politician he was not. The enemy needed killing and killing was what he did best; to ask him to do anything short of that was nonsense. Burrabus had been deemed a pirate, and Drake Abernathy had been the unlucky fool assigned to take Burr down.

BOOOOM!! The cannons fired from Burr?s dragon vessel that had climbed a slightly inclined snowy hill. Drake?s crew was in chaos as the mast fell along with the shredded sails. Abernathy couldn?t believe his eyes as he watched Burr?s ship fire upon them?. From a hilltop??

The Sea Dragon took wing again as it slid from the top of the hill, dipping and skidding across the icy water on its way to the broken Mariner. Some water did seep in through cracks that had come from the firing of the locked cannons, but she held. Burr and his crew would be outmanned ten to one once they boarded the Mariner. Too bad for the Mariner crew, Burr thought too himself.
